If scaling improvements to the protocol concern you, you're in the wrong place

This is rbtc, the subreddit for people who wanted to scale and improve Bitcoin but were censored out of rbitcoin.
Recently, a fair amount of noise has been generated from a few comments made by Jonathan Toomim regarding reducing the block interval.
Reducing the block interval is something that I and many others have assumed would eventually happen. Like the block size limit, the block interval is not a sacred cow variable, but is instead a "safe enough for now" guess that Satoshi pulled out of his ass.
A few things should be said about the block interval:
  1. Can't do instant txns - It probably can't ever be reduced low enough to permit reliable "instant" transactions without a significant penalty to orphan rate, which would be bad.
  2. Can be reduced without penalty - It definitely can be reduced by several factors of two, and maybe even by an entire order of magnitude, without any significant penalty to orphan rate.
  3. Reducing block interval is a scaling improvement - Reducing the average block interval by half offers an equivalent scaling benefit to doubling the block size. Reducing it by an order of magnitude offers equivalent scaling benefit to increasing the block size limit by 10x. A 10x improvement in block interval would be the equivalent to increasing the current BSL to 320MB.
  4. Reducing block interval is a usability improvement - while it is true that reducing block interval is unlikely to facilitate "instant" transactions at the register, it is also true that many other applications would see a usability improvement. An easy example is more quickly moving coins on and off exchanges. But every transaction would see a reduction in confirmation wait times, which is an unqualified win, even at the register. Every application that uses the blockchain would see a UX benefit, however marginal, because other things equal, faster is always better.
Past this, I want to point out that, at this moment, there is literally no plan at all to reduce block interval. None.
All that's happened is just the beginning of some discussion. That's it. A few comments in a reddit sub. Nothing more.
Folks, we have to be able discuss improvements without people freaking out at the mere hint of discussion.

[Winner’s Thread #58] Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I am still in shock, wow. I feel like I’m writing an Oscar’s speech, I just want to thank everyone. So thank you all! I was in the car when I got the notification that I was picked and my heart stopped. This is so unreal. I’ve never felt very lucky but I feel like my life is turning around. I know we could all use this money right now and I feel unbelievably blessed to be in this position.
My name is Luci and I’m 21 years old! I was in college for about a year but left because I did not feel like I was where I was supposed to be. I’m working in an office now just trying to make it in this crazy world!
My favorite thing in the world is to go to the Great Smoky Mountains. It is my happy place. My boyfriend took me on my first vacation ever there and then every year for the past 3 years and I would love to surprise him with a trip there that I plan and pay for when it’s safe to travel. He saved me from my abusive household and has done so much for me that I want to return the favor.
With any money left, I would put some aside to give back to this beautiful community and also put it towards my remaining student loans so I can help my credit and hopefully buy a house one day. Thank you again to everyone! I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to wrap my head around this!
EDIT: This has been the craziest 24 hours of my life. I don’t even know how to put into words the gratitude in my heart. I’ve never experienced so much good and generosity in one place. I hope you all receive so much good karma. You are all so amazing and I am so thankful for every single one of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! ❤️

Official 5Dimes US Customer Cashout Thread

With the 5Dimes closure, let's keep a centralized thread for our cashout issues/FAQs. With the heavy delays thus far and 3rd party payout deadline looming, it'll be good for our collective sanity to report news/statuses as things go. Reminder of the dates :
September 21st : Cutoff for US wagers. I would advise foregoing continued activity on the site now and submitting a cashout request as wait times are already quite long (7+ days).
September 25th : All open wagers refunded. Deadline to submit cashouts is 12AM on this day but I would advise submitting them asap.
All balances not submitted for cashout by the 25th will be sent to a 3rd party claims administrator for payment. This will likely be an annoying and timely process as it was with NettelleFull Tilt Poker so you'll want to avoid this.
Edit : Yes, people have been receiving payouts. Last week people were saying 96-130 hours to receive the confirmation email and within 24 hours after that they received their bitcoin. Reports from this weekend indicate wait times of 7 days, so it appears they're working through a backlog.
Just an internet disclaimer, only 5dimes support/normal channels can process a cashout. If anyone messages you here telling you they can speed things up it's likely a scam. Don't give out personal info or passwords.

[Winner’s Thread #57] Wow!! I never thought it would be me!!!

What a thrill this is!!!
I honestly was stunned (and a little overwhelmed!) when I realized I’d been picked this month.
I’m relatively ancient for a redditor, thoroughly middle aged - and a little bit of a technological luddite. Setting up accounts and sorting through all of the business end of this has been a learning experience. I don’t know how many hours I spent on that, but it was a lot!! Luckily, with a little bit of handholding from u/lilfruini I feel like I’m in pretty good shape (hope your physics went well!!). I have learned SO MUCH, and if nothing else, I’m grateful for that - I honestly had only the dimmest understanding of bitcoin and now I’ve got a bitcoin wallet! What?!?!
A bit about me… Middle aged like I said before. I’m a speech therapist, a plant lover (as has been noted already!), and I have a very rare neurodegenerative disease called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. It’s a progressive disease, and although nobody would wish for something like that, if you’re going to have a neurodegenerative disease, I pretty much have the very best one.
Honestly, I am pretty lucky. I’m in a profession that I love, a place that I love - all of my needs for shelter, food, safety, companionship are met… I know that I’m doing better already than so many, and I have so much to be grateful for in my life.
As to what I plan to do with donations… I had a lot of time yesterday to think about it!!!
First - I need some things for my students - I need a voice amplifier, and some new materials that I can use both in person and for distance learning. If I can find one cheap, I’d also really love to have a second monitor to make teletherapy easier to manage. I’ve already spent so much of my own money on teachers pay teachers and other sites, but there are many more materials and supplies that would help make this challenging school year a little better and easier.
Second - I have my eye on a couple plants - a rubber tree tineke and a manjula pothos… neither of them are very expensive or rare, I just haven’t felt like I had the leeway in my wallet to treat myself to those recently.
And last, but certainly not least. This week just happens to be Spastic Paraplegia Awareness Week! The Spastic Paraplegia Foundation (SPF) is the national organization dedicated to advancing research and finding cures for two groups of closely related, progressive neurological disorders (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia and Primary Lateral Sclerosis). I have been participating in all of the studies available to me - (knowledge is power!) and although I don’t have a lot of money to donate towards research, I certainly don’t mind being a guinea pig in the hopes that someday a treatment or a cure might be found. There are clinical trials going on in Australia right now and they’re working on funding to bring trials to the US as well. If any of you are so inclined and want to learn more you can check out sp-foundation.org.
Thank you to all - and especially again to u/lilfruini who was an enormous help to me.
update
This has been a crazy 24-ish hours!!
I'm not gonna lie, seeing all the notifications about money coming into my accounts has been exciting, but what's been even more meaningful to me are all the kind words, congratulations, and well wishes from all over the world.
Pandemic, and protests, and fires, and everything else going on in the US this summer... It's worn me down... I've been feeling so very tired deep into my bones. All y'all have reminded me that it's not always this way - hope for humanity restored!! :)
My heart feels full and warm and I sincerely wish that everyone could experience this. It's amazing and even after the money is gone I will remember this feeling.
I'm not a millionaire! ;)
I haven't done the exact math, but I'm a thousandaire for sure. I hope all of you who have donated know that I genuinely appreciate it and I will be certain to put this money to good use. I've tried to keep up with thanking everyone - if I missed you it wasn't intentional (except for that one guy - he was a jerk!!)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me this amazing gift.

Can we just talk about how crazy the network hashrate is currently ?

We regularly go above 150Ehashs/s now....
I think too many people don't realise that proof of work applied to transaction confirmation/decentralized timestamping is a such powerful idea, even after the halving the hashrate still increases to reach levels never touched before thanks to technical progress in specialized hardware in which miners throw energy they won't use otherwise.
The bitcoin token is the best money to buy this hashrate through transaction fees so that you can write what you want in the Bitcoin ledger that is the most legit document the humanity ever created thanks to proof of work (just by reading the blockchain content, you know it is legit document). The price of Bitcoin and the transaction fee market reflect how much people need a legit and unforgeable ledger to settle their contracts.
Altcoiner's fud of death spiral because of halving was a complete lack of understanding. Nothing can replace what proof of work and Bitcoin are doing: incentivize the creation of specialized hardware to create the most legit ledger ever made of history.

Good news! I have a couple of people who are potentially interested in sponsoring MB, so I'm excited to explore those opportunities. My goal has always been to simply be revenue neutral, and to keep MB free for everyone to enjoy. (inb4 "RAID Shadow Legends" ad)
Shout-out to Christine for her suggestion to try and improve the bottom-line of MB by moving from Mailchimp to SendFox. It's something I'm going to look into, but I'm very careful about making changes. I'll have to investigate. Thanks also to Jack_ol_lantern for suggesting ways to leverage my domain to try a "roll your own" alternative, and to nikohd for suggesting I offer a bitcoin donation address.
I've got lots to study this weekend! No complaints here, though. Exciting times in MB town.

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.
That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:
  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.
Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.
You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.
If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.
Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.
Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.
To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

How can I connect my node via Tor?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Look to the 2013 1MB hard fork for the answers to the 2016 2MB hard fork

In 2013 after the release of v0.8 when less than half the hash power had upgraded from previous versions (deepbit miner was running v0.3 to stay true to the last version Satoshi released) the chain forked due to too many transactions in a specific block (simplified explanation).
The change underlying the fork was a switch in database technology from BerkeleyDb to LevelDb. The real feature was going from about 750KB block size limit to the current 1MB limit. The chain forked twice during this event. The first accidental fork and the second short notice planned fork.
The first hard fork was merged in less than 30 blocks. The community stayed together. Than an emergency short notice roll-out of v0.8 followed by minors weeks later. Throughout full nodes and exchanges were advised to stay on version v0.8.
After that second fork. Bitcoin had split into BerkeleyDb-Bitcoins and LevelDb-Bitcoins. The latter what most of you hold in your wallets. Presumably some pre-v0.8 full nodes exist on the network with bitcoins in their wallets.
Here comes the theoretical attack. Some experts warn that the upcoming fork will put full node and SPV wallets at risk of seeing confirmed bitcoins that are not spendable on both sides of the fork. If this is a real world attack scenario than we should be able to find evidence of it against the BerkeleyDb-Bitcoins shorter chain. Especially since the difficulty in 2013 is way lower than now and there are some big bitcoin balances that are still spendable on both sides of the fork (BerkeleyDb-Bitcoins chain vs LevelDb-Bitcoins chain).
So where is the evidence that pre-v0.8 nodes are at real risk? Who lost coins due to this attack vector? Can anyone even find pre-v0.8 node with open port 8333?
TL:DR Taking things in perspective we stayed strong as a community when we hard bumped from 750KB to 1MB. Let's stay together for what should be an agreeable hard bump to 2MB. The 2013 fork was safe and so will be the 2016 fork.

Trolls Infestation

Recently, there has been a surge of trolls infestation into rbtc and so, I wanted to write a little bit about this issue, especially for the newcomers. We all know that a global peer to peer monetary system like Bitcoin Cash is a threat to the traditional banking and financial sector. Each day they could delay their demise, they would. If your bank is earning billions of dollars in fees everyday, wouldn’t you mind spending a million or two to cause problems to something that threatens your survival? It’s common sense.
So people like me don’t get angry when I see trolls in rbtc because I know what they want and I know why they are here. And they are confirmation that Bitcoin Cash is moving in the right direction. They are here to disrupt the community and disrupt the global peer to peer cash movement. Therefore, for each troll I encountered, I will onboard 10 new people into the Bitcoin Cash community. I will use the negative energy from trolls and turn them into positive productive fuel to talk to more people about Bitcoin Cash. And when I’m done onboarding 10 new people each time, I feel great and I feel thankful to the trolls for driving me forward.
I have experienced and seen first hand accounts of how Bitcoin Cash has help improved people lives. I have used Bitcoin Cash to pay people to do some work. These are people from third world countries where there is a lack of job opportunities in their own countries and they are struggling to survive each day. People use platforms like https://Read.cash/ to earn a dollar or two each day. That may not seems like much but for some of them, it is money to prevent their families from going hungry. These people cannot afford the high fees of BTC and other cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin Cash is fast, cheap, reliable peer to peer unstoppable money for the world.
I know exactly why I am here in the Bitcoin Cash community. I don’t care how tough this journey is but if something is worth doing, it’s worth even if the odds are not in our favour. I won’t give up and I know I am not alone.

As of now, 630,000 blocks have been mined on the Bitcoin network, and the block reward has successfully halved for the second THIRD time. The previous block reward was 12.5 BTC, and the new block reward is now 6.25 BTC. Since the previous halving at Block 420000, monetary inflation decreased from 4.17%% to 3.57%. Block 630000 signals an immediate 50% reduction to 1.79%. The next halving will occur at Block 840000 in approximately four years. Godspeed, Bitcoin!

You HAVE to Call 5dimes if You Want a Payout

I know others have brought this up in the past but all I saw was people saying the payment is faster if you call, not that you HAVE to call. I was chatting with support and this is the response I got:
"The transaction is pending. Bitcoin payouts have 2 confirmation steps, one via phone to confirm the personal information on file and the amount of the request and another one via email to confirm the account number, 4 digit pin, and the wallet address of the request. At the moment what you can do is call from the number on file to complete the phone verification 1-800-430-5896 in case you are going to call now please make sure to close the chat window first."
It's almost like they don't want to give customers their money back, who could've guessed an offshore book would be like this...

Bitcoin Newcomers FAQ - Please read!

Welcome to the /Bitcoin Sticky FAQ

You've probably been hearing a lot about Bitcoin recently and are wondering what's the big deal? Most of your questions should be answered by the resources below but if you have additional questions feel free to ask them in the comments.
It all started with the release of the release of Satoshi Nakamoto's whitepaper however that will probably go over the head of most readers so we recommend the following videos for a good starting point for understanding how bitcoin works and a little about its long term potential:
Some other great resources include Lopp.net, the Princeton crypto series and James D'Angelo's Bitcoin 101 Blackboard series.
Some excellent writing on Bitcoin's value proposition and future can be found at the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute.
Some Bitcoin statistics can be found here and here. Developer resources can be found here. Peer-reviewed research papers can be found here.
Potential upcoming protocol improvements and scaling resources here and here.
The number of times Bitcoin was declared dead by the media can be found here (LOL!)

Key properties of Bitcoin

Where can I buy bitcoins?

Bitcoin.org and BuyBitcoinWorldwide.com are helpful sites for beginners. You can buy or sell any amount of bitcoin (even just a few dollars worth) and there are several easy methods to purchase bitcoin with cash, credit card or bank transfer. Some of the more popular resources are below, also check out the bitcoinity exchange resources for a larger list of options for purchases.
Here is a listing of local ATMs. If you would like your paycheck automatically converted to bitcoin use Bitwage.
Note: Bitcoins are valued at whatever market price people are willing to pay for them in balancing act of supply vs demand. Unlike traditional markets, bitcoin markets operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Preev is a useful site that that shows how much various denominations of bitcoin are worth in different currencies. Alternatively you can just Google "1 bitcoin in (your local currency)".

Securing your bitcoins

With bitcoin you can "Be your own bank" and personally secure your bitcoins OR you can use third party companies aka "Bitcoin banks" which will hold the bitcoins for you.
Note: For increased security, use Two Factor Authentication (2FA) everywhere it is offered, including email!
2FA requires a second confirmation code to access your account making it much harder for thieves to gain access. Google Authenticator and Authy are the two most popular 2FA services, download links are below. Make sure you create backups of your 2FA codes.
Google Auth Authy OTP Auth
Android Android N/A
iOS iOS iOS

Watch out for scams

As mentioned above, Bitcoin is decentralized, which by definition means there is no official website or Twitter handle or spokesperson or CEO. However, all money attracts thieves. This combination unfortunately results in scammers running official sounding names or pretending to be an authority on YouTube or social media. Many scammers throughout the years have claimed to be the inventor of Bitcoin. Websites like bitcoin(dot)com and the btc subreddit are active scams. Almost all altcoins (shitcoins) are marketed heavily with big promises but are really just designed to separate you from your bitcoin. So be careful: any resource, including all linked in this document, may in the future turn evil. Don't trust, verify. Also as they say in our community "Not your keys, not your coins".

Where can I spend bitcoins?

Check out spendabit or bitcoin directory for millions of merchant options. Also you can spend bitcoin anywhere visa is accepted with bitcoin debit cards such as the CashApp card. Some other useful site are listed below.
Store Product
Gyft Gift cards for hundreds of retailers including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Starbucks, Whole Foods, CVS, Lowes, Home Depot, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Kohls, eBay, GameStop, etc.

Cryptostorm, Mullvad, and PIA VPN services
Namecheap, Porkbun Domain name registration
Stampnik Discounted USPS Priority, Express, First-Class mail postage
Coinmap and AirBitz are helpful to find local businesses accepting bitcoins. A good resource for UK residents is at wheretospendbitcoins.co.uk.
There are also lots of charities which accept bitcoin donations.

Merchant Resources

There are several benefits to accepting bitcoin as a payment option if you are a merchant;
If you are interested in accepting bitcoin as a payment method, there are several options available;

Can I mine bitcoin?

Mining bitcoins can be a fun learning experience, but be aware that you will most likely operate at a loss. Newcomers are often advised to stay away from mining unless they are only interested in it as a hobby similar to folding at home. If you want to learn more about mining you can read more here. Still have mining questions? The crew at /BitcoinMining would be happy to help you out.
If you want to contribute to the bitcoin network by hosting the blockchain and propagating transactions you can run a full node using this setup guide. If you would prefer to keep it simple there are several good options. You can view the global node distribution here.

Earning bitcoins

Just like any other form of money, you can also earn bitcoins by being paid to do a job.

Bitcoin Units

One Bitcoin is quite large (hundreds of £/$/€) so people often deal in smaller units. The most common subunits are listed below:
Unit Symbol Value Info
bitcoin BTC 1 bitcoin one bitcoin is equal to 100 million satoshis
millibitcoin mBTC 1,000 per bitcoin used as default unit in recent Electrum wallet releases
bit bit 1,000,000 per bitcoin colloquial "slang" term for microbitcoin (μBTC)

Realistically - What happens when the Nano Developer Fund runs out?

I'm a very big fan of this project and think Nano is truly the best decentralized coin for payments. Nano is everything Bitcoin should have been - free, instant P2P payments. Every time I use it I am amazed by how fast the transactions are and how they are fully confirmed after ~3 seconds.
This project already has "the tech", but the X-Factoelephant in the room is the dev fund. For whatever reason, the devs of this project seem to require a massive amount of Nano ($) in order to keep the project going. In addition, even with all the funds that are being cashed out monthly (~$40,000-$50,000/month), this project engages in very little marketing (and if the team does engage in marketing, it's not very effective, as many community members have noted). From an investment perspective, I think many people are concerned about the longevity of this project.
The main questions here are:
I love Nano and want to see it succeed. I just hope funding isn't the downfall of this project.

If you need more logical explanation on why 6 confirmations is required then go through this topic. Bitcoin requires 6 confirmations and each block confirmation take about 10 minutes.
